Aquaculture is the cultivation of aquatic organisms. Unlike fishing, aquaculture, also known as aquafarming, implies the cultivation of aquatic populations under controlled conditions.    Mariculture refers to aquaculture practiced in marine environments. Particular kinds of aquaculture include algaculture (the production of kelp/seaweed and other algae); fish farming; shrimp farming, shellfish farming, and the growing of cultured pearls.

L'aquaculture est le terme générique qui désigne toutes les activités de production animale ou végétale en milieu aquatique. L'aquaculture se pratique en bord de mer (on parle dans ce cas de « cultures marines »), des rivières ou des étangs. Elle concerne notamment la production de poisson (pisciculture), d'huîtres (ostréiculture), de moules (mytiliculture) et celle d'autres coquillages (conchyliculture) ou encore d'algues. L'aquaculture fournit 60 es poissons d'eau douce, 40 es mollusques, 30 es crevettes et 5 es poissons d'eau de mer. Celui qui pratique cette forme de culture se nomme l'aquaculteur.

Aquakultur befasst sich mit der kontrollierten Aufzucht von aquatischen, also im Wasser befindlichen, Organismen. Dies sind also per Definition nicht nur Fische, sondern auch Muscheln, Krebstiere und Pflanzen, insbesondere Algen. Allen in Aquakultur produzierten Organismen gemein ist die Zuordnung zu einem Besitzer, der den Bestand hegt und pflegt. So unterscheidet sich die Aquakultur vom klassischen Fischfang in öffentlichen Gewässern. Die Aquakultur gewinnt besonders wegen der Überfischung zunehmend an Bedeutung.

Akwakultura – forma gospodarki ludzkiej, mająca na celu zwiększenie pozyskiwania żywności (rzadziej innych produktów) ze środowiska wodnego; polega na hodowli wybranych rodzajów organizmów wodnych, głównie zwierzęcych, w naturalnych lub sztucznych zbiornikach wodnych – słodko- lub słonowodnych. Najprostszą i najpospolitszą odmianą akwakultury jest zapewnienie korzystnych warunków do bytowania licznym przedstawicielom danego gatunku użytkowego (ryb, mięczaków i in.) w mniej lub bardziej wydzielonej części akwenu. Bardziej intensywną formą jest hodowla w stawach, basenach lub wielkich, zanurzonych w wodzie pojemnikach (klatkach). W takich przypadkach stosuje się dokarmianie, zapewnia, o ile to konieczne, odpowiedni przepływ wody czy natlenianie, ochronę przed drapieżnikami i chorobami, a nawet podgrzewanie wody (np. próby hodowli ryb w basenach z wodą geotermalną) itp. W przypadku organizmów osiadłych (np. glony, ostrygi) zabiegi hodowlane polegają głównie na zwiększeniu powierzchni, na której mogłyby się osiedlać, przez układanie na dnie odpowiednich przedmiotów, np. zużytych opon samochodowych, zawieszanie sieci, sznurów, itp.

Aquacultuur is het proces waarbij vissen, schaaldieren en schelpdieren kunstmatig in vijvers en bassins worden gehouden om deze vervolgens te kunnen verhandelen. Ook bepaalde planten worden wel in het water gekweekt en daarmee tot de aquacultuur gerekend. Er worden zowel vissen gekweekt voor de voedselvoorziening als voor de handel in siervis. Voor wat betreft de voedselvoorziening zijn er verschillende methodes. Onder intensieve kweek worden (veelal afgesloten) systemen verstaan waar veel wordt bijgevoerd, terwijl bij extensieve kweekmethoden weinig wordt bijgevoerd. Er worden daarbij kooien gebruikt die in het water hangen.
