Applause (Latin applaudere, to strike upon, clap) is primarily the expression of approval by the act of clapping, or striking the palms of the hands together, in order to create noise.  Audiences are usually expected to applaud after a performance, such as a musical concert, speech, or play. In most western countries, audience members clap their hands at random to produce a constant noise; however, it tends to synchronize naturally to a weak degree. As a form of mass nonverbal communication, it is a simple indicator of the average relative opinion of the entire group; the louder and longer the noise, the stronger the sign of approval.

Un applaudissement est le battement des mains (plus ou moins rapide, plus ou moins vigoureux et sonore), paume contre paume, d'un individu, d'un groupe ou de toute une foule pour exprimer son approbation, son admiration ou son enthousiasme. On entend des applaudissements, par exemple, en fin de spectacle (concert, pièce de théâtre), en fin ou au cours d'une réunion politique, lors de la remise d'un diplôme ou d'une médaille (à l'issue d'une compétition sportive), ou encore lors du passage du convoi funèbre d'une personnalité estimée.

Beifall (ursprünglich mit der allgemeinen Bedeutung „Zustimmung“, vgl. einer Meinung beifallen) beschreibt den Ausdruck der Billigung oder des Gefallens einer Darbietung. In Europa und den USA wird Beifall meist durch Klatschen mit den Händen (auch Applaus, von lat. applaudere = etwas an etwas schlagen) kundgetan. In Ungarn wird rhythmisch geklatscht (dieses Phänomen nennt man auf ungarisch vastaps, was wortwörtlich "eisernes Klatschen" bedeutet). Steigerungsformen sind „Bravo!“-Rufe (insbesondere in der Oper für weibliche Interpreten auch: „Brava!“, für mehrere Interpreten auch: „Bravi!“), Pfiffe aus dem Publikum oder das Trampeln mit den Füßen. Der Ausruf Da capo! ist gleichfalls ein Mittel zur Beifallsbekundung durch das Publikum. Das Stück war so gut, dass man es am liebsten noch einmal von Beginn an hören würde.
