Die Anorektika (griech. anorektein : „keinen Appetit haben“) oder Appetitzügler sind Arzneistoffe mit appetithemmender Wirkung, die zum Zweck der Gewichtsreduktion eingesetzt werden. Diese Wirkung beruht auf einer Hemmung des Hungerzentrums oder einer Beeinflussung des Sättigungszentrums im Hypothalamus des Gehirns. Die bekanntesten Vertreter dieser Stoffgruppe sind Aminorex, Cathin, Phentermin, Fenfluramin, Sibutramin und Rimonabant. Viele dieser Arzneistoffe werden auf Grund schwerer Nebenwirkungen, wie z.B. pulmonale Hypertonie und Herzklappenschäden nicht mehr therapeutisch verwendet.

Jadłowstręt psychiczny (z grec. an - brak, pozbawienie, orexis - apetyt Anorexia nervosa) - choroba cywilizacyjna polegająca na utracie wagi wywołanej przez osobę chorą, z objawami dysmorfofobii, w której odczuwa ona lęk, ponieważ nie spełnia wymogów współczesnego świata co do własnego wyglądu oraz w sposób zaburzony spostrzega własne ciało. Lęk przybiera postać uporczywej idei nadwartościowej, w związku z czym pacjent wyznacza sobie niski limit wagi. Dotyczy przeważnie dziewcząt i kobiet w wieku 10-13 lat oraz 16-21. Po raz pierwszy opisał tę chorobę w połowie XIX wieku E. Lasčgue i W. Gull.
