Antiseptics (Greek αντί, against, and σηπτικός, putrefactive) are antimicrobial substances that are applied to living tissue/skin to reduce the possibility of infection, sepsis, or putrefaction. They should generally be distinguished from antibiotics that destroy microorganisms within the body, and from disinfectants, which destroy microorganisms found on non-living objects. Some antiseptics are true germicides, capable of destroying microbes (bacteriocidal), whilst others are bacteriostatic and only prevent or inhibit their growth. Antibacterials are antiseptics that only act against bacteria.

Un antiseptique est une substance qui tue ou prévient la croissance de bactéries et des virus sur les surfaces externes du corps. Ils sont à distinguer des antibiotiques qui agissent de même à l'intérieur du corps seulement contre les bactéries, et des désinfectants qui opèrent sur des objets inanimés tels que des instruments médicaux. Le principe de l'antisepsie fut démontré scientifiquement pour la première fois par le britannique Joseph Lister.

Mit Antisepsis (griech. wörtlich „gegen Fäulnis“) bezeichnet man alle Maßnahmen zur Verminderung von infektiösen Keimen und damit zur Verhinderung einer Infektion. Antiseptische Maßnahmen sind die Desinfektion von Oberflächen, Materialien und Gegenständen. Auch die Desinfektion von Wunden dient diesem Ziel.

Antisepsis betekent het ontsmetten van de huid, zoals voorafgaand een operatieve ingreep of behandeling van een wond.De bacteriële flora van de huid kan bij penetratie van de huidbarrière een wondinfectie veroorzaken. Het ontsmetten van de huid doet de bacteriële kolonisatie van de huid dalen en onderdrukt tijdelijk de groei ervan.Antisepsis (van het Grieks anti = tegen en sèpoo = doen rotten) wordt gebruikt voor toepassing op levende weefsels, en dient te worden onderscheiden van desinfectie. Dit omvat de behandeling van levenloze materialen zoals instrumenten, oppervlakken en water.
