Anthropology is the academic study of humanity. It deals with all that is characteristic of the human experience, from physiology and the evolutionary origins to the social and cultural organization of human societies as well as individual and collective forms of human experience. It has origins in the humanities, the natural sciences, and the social sciences. The term "" is from the Greek anthrōpos , "man", understood to mean humankind or humanity, and (-λογία), "discourse" or "study."

Anthropologie ( [ánthropos] „Mensch“ (siehe Etymologie) und -logie) ist frei übersetzt „die Wissenschaft vom Menschen“. Der Begriff geht auf den Leipziger Philosophen, Arzt und Theologen Magnus Hundt (1449–1519) zurück. Im deutschen Sprachraum und in vielen europäischen Ländern wird unter dem Universitätsfach „Anthropologie“ in erster Linie die naturwissenschaftliche oder physische Anthropologie verstanden. Der Mensch wird im Anschluss an den englischen Naturforscher Darwin (1809–1882) und die Evolutionstheorie genetisch-biologisch als ein rein natürliches Wesen aufgefasst. Tatsächlich ist die gemeinsame Artzugehörigkeit die einzige unumstrittene Eigenschaft, von der angenommen wird, dass alle Menschen sie haben.

L'anthropologie est la branche des sciences qui étudie les êtres humains sous tous leurs aspects, à la fois physiques (anatomie, physiologie, pathologie, évolution) et  culturels (sociaux, psychologiques, géographiques, etc.). Elle tend à définir l'humanité en faisant une synthèse des différentes sciences humaines et sciences de la nature. Le terme, anthropologie vient de deux mots grecs, anthropos qui signifie homme et logos qui signifie l'étude.

Antropologia (gr. άνθρωπος anthropos – człowiek, λόγος logos – nauka) jest nauką, która zajmuje się badaniem człowieka jako jednostki i jako społeczności. W znaczeniu obszerniejszym wykorzystuje wiele nauk zajmujących się w mniejszym lub większym stopniu człowiekiem i jego życiem (medycyna, psychologia, socjologia), jednakże uwzględnia je o tyle, o ile ich zdobycze mają znaczenie dla zrozumienia właściwości i rozwoju człowieka. Antropologia w ściślejszym tego słowa znaczeniu jest gałęzią nauk przyrodniczych zajmującą się człowiekiem i rasami etnograficznymi człowieka w sposób podobny, w jaki entomologia zajmuje się owadami. Antropologia posługuje się narzędziami takimi jak reszta nauk porównawczych, a do najważniejszych z nich należą:
