Anonymity is derived from the Greek word ανωνυμία, meaning "without a name" or "namelessness". In colloquial use, the term typically refers to a person, and often means that the personal identity, or personally identifiable information of that person is not known. More strictly, and in reference to an arbitrary element (e.g. a human, an object, a computer), within a well-defined set (called the "anonymity set"), "anonymity" of that element refers to the property of that element of not being identifiable within this set. If it is not identifiable, then the element is said to be "anonymous".

Uno pseudonimo è un nome fittizio, diverso da quello anagrafico, utilizzato da scrittori, cantanti, artisti, personaggi politici o altri personaggi pubblici per nascondere la propria vera identità o come nome d'arte. In molti casi lo pseudonimo, come si noterà in séguito, è semplicemente una forma in qualche modo abbreviata di un nome anagrafico particolarmente lungo o di difficile pronuncia rispetto al sistema fonolinguistico della lingua in uso nel paese in cui si opera artisticamente o professionalmente. Nella Repubblica italiana lo pseudonimo, qualora sia utilizzato in maniera tale da avere acquisito l'importanza del nome, e cioè da rendere la persona riconoscibile pubblicamente, è tutelato al pari del nome anagrafico ai sensi dell'articolo 9 del codice civile.

Een pseudoniem (Oud-Grieks: ψευδεσθαι "pseudesthai" betekent liegen), artiestennaam of schuilnaam is een naam die door een schrijver of kunstenaar wordt bedacht om de maker van het werk mee aan te duiden.
