Anomie describes a lack of social norms; "normlessness". It describes the breakdown of social bonds between an individual and their community ties, with fragmentation of social identity and rejection of self-regulatory values. It was popularized by French sociologist Émile Durkheim in his influential book Suicide (1897). Durkheim borrowed the word from French philosopher Jean-Marie Guyau. Durkheim never uses the term normlessness; rather, he describes anomie as "a rule that is a lack of rule," "derangement," and "an insatiable will."

Anomie (griech.: Kompositum aus a privativum zur Verneinung und der Endung -nomie für = „Ordnung, Gesetz“) bezeichnet in der Soziologie einen Zustand fehlender oder geringer sozialer Normen, Regeln und Ordnung. Vor allem in England war der Begriff ursprünglich ein theologischer Ausdruck für das Brechen religiöser Gesetze. Zur Beschreibung einer Anomie wird umgangssprachlich und irreführend häufig auch das Wort Anarchie (Abwesenheit von Herrschaft) benutzt.

Anomia (gr. a- = "bez", nomos = "prawo") - pojęcie wprowadzone do socjologii przez Emila Durkheima (1858-1917), określające stan społeczny, w którym jednostki społeczne wobec narzucanych przez społeczeństwo celów czy wartości, które należy realizować, nie mają możliwości zrealizowania tych celów czy uzyskania wartości za pomocą społecznie akceptowanych środków czyli zgodnie z przyjmowanymi w społeczeństwie normami.
