Anesthesia or anaesthesia (see spelling differences; from Greek αν- an- “without” + αἲσθησις aisthesis “sensation”) has traditionally meant the condition of having the feeling of pain and other sensations blocked. This allows patients to undergo surgery and other procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience. The word was coined by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. in 1846. Another definition is a "reversible lack of awareness", whether this is a total lack of awareness (e.g. a general anaesthestic) or a lack of awareness of a part of a the body such as a spinal anaesthetic or another nerve block would cause.

Le mot anesthésie provient du grec aïsthêsis (αισθησις: faculté de percevoir par les sens) combiné à l'alpha (α) privatif et du nu (ν) euphonique.. L'anesthésie peut viser un membre, une région ou l'organisme entier (anesthésie générale). L'anesthésie est la suppression de la douleur. Elle vise à permettre une procédure médicale qui autrement serait trop douloureuse. L'anesthésie loco-régionale est aussi pratiquée dans les cas de douleurs chroniques.

Mit Anästhesie wird gleichermaßen der durch eine Narkose hervorgerufene Zustand der Empfindungslosigkeit zum Zweck einer operativen (oder diagnostischen) Maßnahme bezeichnet wie die medizinische Fachdisziplin, die sich mit der Bewerkstelligung desselben beschäftigt. Die Anästhesie ist als Arbeitsgebiet ein Teil der Anästhesiologie, zu dem auch die Gebiete Intensivmedizin und Schmerztherapie gehören. Teilweise werden auch Palliativmedizin und Notfallmedizin zur Anästhesiologie hinzugerechnet.In den meisten Industrienationen wird die Anästhesie durch einen spezialisierten Arzt ausgeführt. In Deutschland trägt er die Bezeichnung Facharzt für Anästhesiologie oder kurz Anästhesist oder landläufig auch Narkosearzt. In der Regel steht ihm eine Pflegekraft zur Seite, die ebenfalls häufig über eine definierte Weiterbildung in Anästhesie und Intensivmedizin verfügt.

Znieczulenie - bezpieczne i bezbolesne przeprowadzenie pacjenta przez czas operacji lub innego, potencjalnie bolesnego lub nieprzyjemnego zabiegu medycznego. W większości przypadków polega na zablokowaniu receptorów bólowych (nocyceptorów) lub przerwaniu przewodzenia we włóknach nerwowych. Anestesia è un termine medico che indica genericamente l'abolizione della sensibilità, della coscienza e del dolore, associato a rilassamento muscolare. L'Anestesiologia è quindi quella branca della medicina che si occupa di annullare la sensibilità dolorifica e la coscienza durante un intervento di chirurgia.
