ancient Near East

The terms ancient Near East or ancient Orient encompass the early civilizations predating classical antiquity in the region roughly corresponding to that described by the modern term Middle East (Egypt, Iraq, Turkey), during the time roughly spanning the Bronze Age from the rise of Sumer and Gerzeh in the 4th millennium BCE to the expansion of the Persian Empire in the 6th century BCE. As such, it is a term widely employed in the fields of Near Eastern archaeology, ancient History and Egyptology.

L'expression Proche-Orient ancien désigne un ensemble de cultures et civilisations qui se sont épanouies du Néolithique à la haute Antiquité dans sur un espace comprenant dans son acception la plus restreinte le Levant, la Mésopotamie, l'Anatolie et le Plateau iranien. On peut également trouver les termes Orient ancien ou Asie du sud-ouest ancienne.

Der Begriff Alter Orient bezeichnet die alten Hochkulturen in Vorderasien (Syrien, Palästina, Phönizien, Kleinasien, Anatolien), Mesopotamien und der iranischen Hochebene und schließt manchmal auch umfassender das Alte Ägypten und Arabien mit ein (oder knapp gesagt, im Großen und Ganzen das von Alexander dem Großen eroberte Weltreich ohne die europäischen Reichsteile oder auch das persische Reich unter Dareios I. zuvor). Da mit den altorientalischen Hochkulturen die Schriftlichkeit einsetzte, bilden sie auch einen Teil des Altertums.
