Ancient Greek is the stage of the Greek language in the periods spanning the times c. 9th – 6th centuries BC, (known as Archaic), c. 5th – 4th centuries BC (Classical), and the c. 3rd century BC – 6th century AD (Hellenistic) of ancient Greece and the ancient world; being predated in the 2nd millennium BC by Mycenaean Greek. The language of the Hellenistic phase is known as Koine (common) or Biblical Greek, the language from the late period onward has no considerable difference from  Medieval Greek. Koine is regarded as a separate historical stage of its own, although in its earlier form it closely resembles the Classical. Prior to the Koine period, Greek of the classic and earlier periods included several regional dialects.

Klassisk grekiska är benämningen på den grekiska som var skriftspråk och talades under den attiska perioden (400-talet f. Kr). Mer korrekt är att tala om den antika grekiskan om man vill ringa in den grekiska som inte innefattar nygrekiska. Den antika grekiskan innefattar en mängd olika dialekter, däribland joniska, attiska, doriska och en efterklassisk grekiska (ca 100 e. kr) som starkt påminner om den attiska (se nedan). Den grekiska som Nya testamentet är skriven på kallas koiné, vilket betyder 'gemensam'.

Język grecki klasyczny inaczej greka klasyczna - stadium rozwojowe języka greckiego, używanego w okresie klasycznym (500 r. p.n.e. - 350 r. p.n.e.) starożytnej Grecji. Był to jeden z ważniejszych języków starożytności, rozpowszechniony na znacznych obszarach Półwyspu Bałkańskiego i Azji Mniejszej oraz na Cyprze. Dzisiaj ten język można studiować na filologii klasycznej. Był to język bogatej literatury, w okresie klasycznym działał Tukidydes, Arystofanes, Platon, mówcy ateńscy.
