The term is generally used in contrast with, or in relation to, "phenomenon" (plural: phenomena), which refers to appearances, or objects of the senses. That which is perceived but not tangible.

Définition et premières occurrences Le noumène (du grec « nooumena », réalité intelligible, mot dérivé de « noûs » ou « noos », intelligence, esprit, pensée, soit comme principe, soit comme faculté) est un terme employé à l'origine par Platon pour désigner les « Idées », c'est-à-dire la réalité intelligible (par opposition au monde sensible), accessible à la connaissance rationnelle. Au contraire, chez Emmanuel Kant, auquel le terme de « noumène » est le plus souvent renvoyé, il s'agit de tout ce qui existe et que la sensibilité ne peut atteindre, restreignant par là les prétentions de la raison quant à la connaissance. « Noumène » est parfois considéré comme synonyme de chose en soi, faisant référence aux faits tels qu'ils sont absolument et en eux-mêmes, par opposition au terme de phénomène, faisant référence à ce qui est connaissable.

An sich und für uns sind Begriffe der philosophischen Fachsprache. Mit „an sich“ bezeichnet man Gegenstände und Tatsachen, insofern sie unabhängig vom Bewusstsein einer Person sind. Den Gegensatz hierzu bilden Gegenstände, insofern sie „für uns“ sind, also uns in einer bestimmten Weise subjektiv erscheinen. Zahlreiche Theoretiker vertreten, dass bei bestimmten Typen von Objekten deren Ansichten "für uns" und ihre Beschaffenheit "an sich" systematisch verschieden sind. Dieser Unterschied wird unterschiedlich erklärt. Von einigen Philosophen wird er auch bestritten.

"Rzecz sama w sobie", noumen (gr. rzecz wyobrażona; pomyślana od nous - rozum, duch) – termin wprowadzony do filozofii przez Immanuela Kanta na oznaczenie rzeczywistości, która istnieje niezależnie od świadomości i jest absolutnie niepoznawalna, nie może się stać "rzeczą dla nas", tzn. nie może być poznana.

Вещь в себе (; ; ; ), но́умен (, от , «ум, разум») — философский термин, обозначающий явления и объекты умопостигаемые, в отличие от чувственно постигаемых (данных нам в объективной реальности) феноменов; вещь как таковая («сама по себе»), вне зависимости от нашего восприятия. Другое толкование - "Вещь в себе" -это "нечто", сущность и смысл которого известны только ему самому.
