Amphibians (class Amphibia; from Greek αμφις "both" and βιος "life") are a taxon of animals that include all living tetrapods (four-legged vertebrates) that do not have amniotic eggs, are ectothermic (term for the animals whose body heat is regulated by the external environment; previously known as cold-blooded), and generally spend part of their time on land. Most amphibians do not have the adaptations to an entirely terrestrial existence found in most other modern tetrapods (amniotes). There are around 6,000 described, living species of amphibians. The study of amphibians and reptiles is known as herpetology. Amphibians are able to breathe through their skin.

Die Amphibien oder Lurche (Amphibia) sind die stammesgeschichtlich älteste Klasse der Landwirbeltiere (Tetrapoda). Ihr wissenschaftlicher Name leitet sich aus dem Griechischen ἀμφί [amphi] „auf beiden Seiten“ und βίος [bios] „Leben“ ab, bedeutet also „doppellebig“. Dies rührt daher, dass die meisten Amphibien zunächst ein Larvenstadium im Wasser durchlaufen und nach einer Metamorphose an Land leben können. Auch die erwachsenen Tiere bewohnen meist sowohl aquatische als auch terrestrische Habitate; sie sind zumindest auf die Nähe von Gewässern angewiesen. Viele Arten sind nachtaktiv, um sich vor Fressfeinden zu schützen und den Wasserverlust über die Haut gering zu halten.

Płazy (Amphibia) to gromada kręgowców ziemnowodnych, czworonożnych (wyjątek: płazy beznogie), o ciele okrytym cienką skórą bez łusek (wyjątek płazy beznogie). Wilgotna skóra umożliwia płazom wymianę gazową. Wszystkie płazy są zmiennocieplne. W skórze znajdują się liczne gruczoły śluzowe, czasem jadowe (np. parotydy u ropuchy), a także komórki pigmentowe. Najbardziej niebezpieczny jest jad niewielkich, barwnych drzewołazów z Ameryki Południowej. Płazy są drapieżne. Występują na wszystkich kontynentach poza Antarktydą. Wielkość: od 9 mm do 1,8 m. Nauce znanych jest obecnie około 6200 gatunków płazów.
