alveolus

An alveolus (plural: alveoli, from Latin alveus, "little cavity"), is an anatomical structure that has the form of a hollow cavity. Mainly found in the lung, the pulmonary alveoli are spherical outcroppings of the respiratory bronchioles and are the primary sites of gas exchange with the blood. Alveoli are particular to mammalian lungs; different structures are involved in gas exchange in other vertebrates.

Pęcherzyk płucny - struktura anatomiczna ludzkiego płuca posiadająca kształt wydrążonej jamy, której ścianę tworzy cienki nabłonek jednowarstwowy płaski (zbudowany głównie z pneumocytów I i II typu). Z zewnątrz pęcherzyki są pokryte przez naczynia włosowate. Liczbę pęcherzyków w płucach człowieka szacuje się na 300-500 milionów, ich średnica wynosi od 0,15 do 0,6 mm, a ich łączna powierzchnia wynosi od 50 do 90 m². Są pokryte surfaktantem, co zabezpiecza płuca przed zapadnięciem. Dodatkowo są oplecione sprężystymi włóknami białkowymi, przede wszystkim kolagenowymi, co nadaje sprężystość tkance płucnej.

Pulmonaire alveolen of longblaasjes zijn alveolen in de longen. Het zijn de uiteinden van de luchtpijptakjes, waar de gaswisseling tijdens de ademhaling plaatsvindt. CO₂ wordt er afgegeven aan de lucht, O₂ wordt er opgenomen door het bloed. Ze bestaan uit alveolaire dekcellen en septale cellen.
