The alto clarinet is a woodwind instrument of the clarinet family. It is a transposing instrument pitched in the key of E, though instruments in F (and in the 19th century, E) have been made. It is sometimes known as a tenor clarinet; this name especially is applied to the instrument in F. In size it lies between the soprano clarinet and the bass clarinet, to which it bears a greater resemblance in that it typically has a straight body (made of Grenadilla or other wood, hard rubber, or  plastic), but a curved neck and bell made of metal. All-metal alto clarinets also exist. In appearance it strongly resembles the basset horn, but usually differs in three respects: it is pitched a tone lower, it lacks an extended lower range, and it has a wider bore than most basset horns.

アルトクラリネット(alto clarinet)は、クラリネットの同属楽器。変ホ調(in E♭)の移調楽器で、バセットホルンの代用としてヘ調(in Ｆ)の楽器も作られている。I.ミュラーやH.グレンザーによって発明され、アドルフ・サックスによって楽器の改良がなされた。

アルトクラリネットはオーケストラには使われておらず、おもに吹奏楽やクラリネットアンサンブルなどで使われている。吹奏楽における役割は、大きく次の3つである。

• バスクラリネットなどとともにベースラインを構成する
• テナーサキソフォン、ユーフォニアムなどとともに対旋律を演奏する
• クラリネット属によるアンサンブルを形成する

吹奏楽において、アルトクラリネットがソロを指定されていることはほとんどない。 1950年代以来、幾人かのミュージシャンが、標準の吹奏楽編成から排除されるべきであるとの意見を述べている。一方でその効果を主張する意見もある。

Alttoklarinetti on puupuhallin, joka on läheistä sukua tavalliselle klarinetille. Alttoklarinetti on melko harvinainen soitin, ja se on tavallisimmin es-vireinen. Alttoklarinetin puinen putki päättyy ylöspäin nousevaan metalliseen kaikusuppiloon. Soitinta käytetään tavallisesti puhallinorkestereissa ja sotilassoittokunnissa.
