Alpha particles (named after and denoted by the first letter in the Greek alphabet, α) consist of two protons and two neutrons bound together into a particle identical to a helium nucleus; hence, it can be written as He2+ or 42He. They are a highly ionizing form of particle radiation, and have low penetration. The alpha particle mass is 6.644656×10-27 kg, which is equivalent to the energy of 3.72738 GeV. The charge of an alpha particle is equal to +2e, where e is the magnitude of charge on an electron, e=1.602176462x10-19C.

Alphastrahlung oder a-Strahlung ist eine Art von ionisierender Strahlung, die bei einem radioaktiven Zerfall, dem Alphazerfall, auftritt. Ein radioaktives Nuklid, das diese Strahlung aussendet, wird als Alphastrahler bezeichnet. Cząstka alfa (helion) składa się z dwóch protonów i dwóch neutronów. Ma ładunek dodatni i jest identyczna z jądrem atomu izotopu ⁴He, więc często oznacza się ją jako He2+. Het is identiek aan een kern van de 4He isotoop van helium.Het feit dat een dergelijke heliumkern 0,7 % minder weegt dan 4 afzonderlijke waterstofkernen (protonen), betekent dat bij de fusie van 4 waterstofkernen tot 1 heliumkern, zoals die - onder zeer hoge temperatuur en druk - in de kernen van sterren plaats vindt, 0,7% van de massa in energie wordt omgezet. Dit is de voornaamste energiebron van sterren, waaronder ook onze zon.
