alkyl

An alkyl is a univalent (or free) radical containing only carbon and hydrogen atoms arranged in a chain. The alkyls form a homologous series with the general formula CnH2n+1. Examples include methyl, CH3· (derived from methane) and butyl C4H9· (derived from butane). They are normally not found on their own but are found as part of larger branched chain organic molecules. On their own they are free radicals and therefore extremely reactive.

Ogólny wzór grupy alkilowej: CnH2n+1 Najprostszą z nich jest grupa metylowa (-CH3): Podobnie jak alkany, grupy alkilowe mogą być liniowe, rozgałęzione i cykliczne. Grupy alkilowe występują powszechnie w ogromnej większości związków organicznych, stanowiąc ich podstawowy budulec.

Een alkylgroep is een functionele groep afgeleid van alkanen. Dergelijke groepen bevatten enkel koolstof- en waterstofatomen en zijn van de vorm CnH2n+1. Wanneer men over de functionele groep op zich spreekt, kan men ze voorstellen als radicalen, door verwijdering van een waterstofatoom van een willekeurig koolstofatoom. Voorbeelden zijn methyl CH3. (afgeleid van methaan), en butyl C4H9. (afgeleid van butaan).
