Alen or aln is a traditional Scandinavian unit of distance similar to the north German elle: roughly 60 centimeters. The Danish alen, also used in Norway, was equal to 62.77 centimeters (2 Danish fod). The Swedish aln was 59.38 centimeters.

Ålen is the administrative centre of Holtålen municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway.It is also a former municipality, created in 1855 by a split from Holtaalen. At that time Ålen had a population of 1.487. An uninhabited part of Ålen was moved to Røros in 1875. The remaining part of Holtålen changed its name to Haltdalen in 1937.On 1 January 1972 Ålen was merged with Haltdalen to once again form the municipality Holtålen. Prior to the merger Ålen municipality had a population of 1.944.
