Alcoholism is a broad term for problems with alcohol, and is generally used to mean compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcoholic beverages, usually to the detriment of the drinker's health, personal relationships, and social standing. It is medically considered a disease, specifically a neurological disorder, and in medicine several other terms are used, specifically "alcohol abuse" and "alcohol dependence," which have more specific definitions. In 1979 an expert World Health Organization committee discouraged the use of "alcoholism" in medicine, preferring the category of "alcohol dependence syndrome". In the 19th and early 20th centuries, alcohol dependence in general was called dipsomania, but that term now has a much more specific meaning. People suffering from alcoholism are often called "alcoholics". Many other terms, some of them insulting or informal, have been used throughout history. The World Health Organization estimates that there are 140 million people with alcoholism worldwide.

Eine Alkoholkrankheit (oder Alkoholabhängigkeit), früher auch „Dipsomanie“, „Potomanie“, „Trunksucht“, „Alkoholsucht“ oder „Alkoholismus“ genannt, ist eine Abhängigkeit von der psychotropen Substanz Ethanol. Es handelt sich um eine progressive Krankheit, in deren Verlauf sich die Beschaffung und der Konsum von Alkohol zum lebensbestimmenden Inhalt entwickeln kann. Typische Symptome sind der Zwang zum Konsum, fortschreitender Kontrollverlust, Vernachlässigung früherer Interessen zugunsten des Trinkens, Leugnen des Suchtverhaltens, Entzugserscheinungen bei Konsumreduktion, Nachweis einer Toleranz gegenüber Alkohol („Trinkfestigkeit“) sowie der Veränderung der Persönlichkeit. Der übermäßige Konsum wird auch als Alkoholabusus oder Alkoholmissbrauch (Alkoholkonsum mit nachweislich schädlicher Wirkung) bezeichnet, im medizinischen Jargon manchmal stark vereinfachend auch als C₂-Abusus (Die chemische Summenformel von Ethanol ist C₂H₅OH, C steht für Kohlenstoff).

L'alcoolisme, mieux défini sous le terme d'alcoolo-dépendance ou de maladie alcoolique, est une maladie chronique décrivant chez un individu une addiction à l'éthanol ainsi que les répercutions tant sur le plan physiologique, psychologique ou social d'une consommation toxicomaniaque de boissons alcoolisées.

Alkoholism är en term med flera och ibland motsatta definitioner. I allmän och historisk användning refererar alkoholism till ett tillstånd av fortsatt konsumtion av alkoholdrycker trots de hälsoproblem och negativa sociala konsekvenser det orsakar. Enligt medicinska definitioner är alkoholism en sjukdom, inte ett beteende. Alkoholism kan också referera till en dragning åt konsumtion av alkohol och/eller en förhindrad förmåga att känna igen de negativa effekterna av överdriven alkoholkonsumtion. Även om inte alla dessa definitioner specificerar pågående och fortgående alkoholbruk så gör vissa det, och kan också ta upp konsekvenser av långvarigt alkoholmissbruk såsom fysiskt beroende och abstinens.

Alkoholizm, inaczej uzależnienie od alkoholu, toksykomania alkoholowa lub choroba alkoholowa (łac. alcoholismus habitualis, alcoholismus chronicus) – choroba polegająca na utracie kontroli nad ilością wypijanego alkoholu.
