Alcohol (stofklasse)
Een alcohol is in de scheikunde een organische verbinding met een C-OH groep (hydroxylgroep) er in. De eenvoudigste alcohol is methanol, CH3OH. De bekendste alcohol is ethanol C2H5OH (ook te schrijven als CH3CH2OH). Als in het dagelijks leven van 'alcohol' sprake is, wordt ethanol bedoeld. Methylalcohol en ethylalcohol zijn verouderde namen voor methanol en ethanol, maar ze worden nog wel eens gebruikt.
