An aircraft is a vehicle that is able to fly by gaining support from the air, or, in general, the atmosphere of a planet. It counters the force of gravity by using either static lift or by using the dynamic lift of an airfoil, or in a few cases the downward thrust from jet engines.

Ein Luftfahrzeug ist ein Gerät, das innerhalb der Erdatmosphäre  fliegt oder fährt.

Un aéronef est un appareil capable d'évoluer au sein de l'atmosphère terrestre. On distingue deux catégories d'aéronefs : l'aérostat et l'aérodyne.
L'utilisation de ces appareils est l'aéronautique, ses adeptes sont les aviateurs et les aviatrices.

Flygmaskin är en gemensam beteckning på konstruktioner som kan hålla sig uppe i atmosfären med hjälp av luftens statiska eller dynamiska kraft. Man definierar ofta flygmaskiner som varje maskin gjord för att flyga i atmosfären.

Statek powietrzny to urządzenie zdolne do unoszenia się w atmosferze na skutek oddziaływania powietrza innego niż oddziaływanie powietrza odbitego od podłoża (zgodnie z definicją legalną z ustawy — Prawo lotnicze). Ze względu na sposób unoszenia się w powietrzu statki powietrzne dzieli się na aerostaty (lżejsze od powietrza) i aerodyny (cięższe od powietrza).
