Etiology (alternatively aetiology, aitiology ) is the study of causation, or origination. The word is derived from the Greek , aitiologia, "giving a reason for" (, aitia, "cause"; and , ).

Ätiologie
Die Ätiologie (v. griech. αἰτία = „Ursache“ und λόγος = „Vernunft, Lehre“) ist eine Fachrichtung der Medizin, die sich mit der Ursache von Krankheiten beschäftigt. In der Antike wurde der Begriff auch von philosophischen Schulen für die Lehre von den Ursachen verwendet. Das Adjektiv ätiologisch bedeutet dementsprechend "die Ätiologie betreffend" oder "ursächlich, begründend, kausal".

Etiologi
Etiologi är läran om orsakssamband, eller kausalitet. Termen kommer ifrån grekiskans aitia, orsak, och logia, lära, och används inom filosofi, fysik, psykologi och biologi då man diskuterar orsaker till olika fenomen.

Etiologia
Etiologia (z łac. aetiologia - stwierdzenie przyczyny, z gr. αίτιολοία - badanie przyczyn, od aitía - przyczyna i lógos - słowo, nauka) - nauka badająca przyczyny zjawisk, procesów i faktów.

Etiologia:

  • w medycynie - zespół przyczyn składających się na powstanie choroby,
  • w historii - odkrywanie przyczyn poszczególnych faktów,
  • w prawie - badanie przyczyn przestępczości.

W mitologii występuje mit etiologiczny, którego celem jest wyjaśnienie pochodzenia jakiejś nazwy lub stworzenie mitycznej historii danego miejsca lub rodziny. Szczególnym zastosowaniem mitów etiologicznych były etiologie biblijne.
