Aesthetics (also spelled esthetics) is a branch of philosophy, a species of value theory or axiology, which is the study of sensory or sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste. Aesthetics is closely associated with the philosophy of art.

Dans le langage courant, l'adjectif esthétique est synonyme de beau, de joli. Et comme nom, esthétique est une notion désignant l'ensemble des caractéristiques qui déterminent l'apparence d'une chose, souvent synonyme de design ou d'aspect physique du corps humain.

Ästhetik (gr. aísthesis: sinnliche Wahrnehmung) war bis zum 19. Jahrhundert vor allem die Lehre der Schönheit. Alltagssprachlich wird der Ausdruck ästhetisch heute meist als Synonym für schön, geschmackvoll oder ansprechend verwendet. In der Wissenschaft bezeichnet der Begriff die gesamte Palette von Eigenschaften, die darüber entscheiden, wie Menschen Gegenstände wahrnehmen.

Estetyka – (gr. aisthetikos - dosł. 'dotyczący poznania zmysłowego', ale też 'wrażliwy') trad. dziedzina filozofii, zajmująca się pięknem i innymi wartościami estetycznymi. W polskiej literaturze filozoficznej przedmiot estetyki w sposób najbardziej precyzyjny został określony przez Marię Gołaszewską w jej książce pt. Zarys estetyki, gdzie opisano estetykę jako naukę zajmującą się tzw. sytuacją estetyczną. W ramy sytuacji estetycznej wchodzą artysta (twórca), proces twórczy, dzieło sztuki, odbiorca, proces percepcji sztuki oraz wartości estetyczne. Zadaniem estetyki filozoficznej jest opisać relacje pomiędzy poszczególnymi elementami sytuacji estetycznej.

L'estetica è un settore della filosofia che si occupa della conoscenza del bello naturale e artistico, ovvero del giudizio di gusto.Il filosofo tedesco Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten scrisse Aesthetica in latino nel 1750, ma il termine era stato coniato nel 1735 nella sua tesi di laurea intitolata "Meditazioni filosofiche su argomenti concernenti la poesia". La parola aesthetica ha origine dalla parola greca aisthesis che significa sensazione e dalla parola aisthanomai che significa percezione mediata dal senso. Originariamente l'estetica infatti non è una parte a sé stante della filosofia, ma semplicemente l'aspetto della conoscenza che riguarda l'uso dei sensi.
