An adventure game is a video game in which the player assumes the role of protagonist in an interactive story driven by exploration and puzzle-solving instead of physical challenge. The genre's focus on story allows it to draw heavily from other narrative-based media such as literature and film, encompassing a wide variety of literary genres. Nearly all adventure games are designed for a single player, since this emphasis on story and character makes multi-player design difficult.

Colossal Cave Adventure (also known as ADVENT, Colossal Cave, or Adventure) gave its name to the computer adventure game genre. It was originally designed by Will Crowther, a programmer and caving enthusiast who based the layout on part of the Mammoth Cave system in Kentucky. The Colossal Cave subnetwork has many entrances, one of which is known as Bedquilt. Crowther reproduced portions of the real cave so faithfully that cavers who have played the game can easily navigate through familiar sections in the Bedquilt region on their first visit.

In einem Adventure löst der Spieler typischerweise verschiedene Rätsel, findet Gegenstände oder Informationen, redet mit anderen Figuren und treibt so die im Vordergrund stehende Handlung voran. Das Spielerlebnis kann dabei auf ganz unterschiedlichen Spielelementen beruhen: Manche Adventures wollen eine komplexe Geschichte erzählen, manche wollen mit schrägen Charakteren und witzigen Dialogen die Spieler zum Lachen bringen und andere wiederum sind reine Rätselspiele. Oft ist die Handhabung des Inventars, d. h. die Kombination und Anwendung der Gegenstände, die man bei sich trägt, ein wichtiges Spielelement.
