An addiction is a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences to the individuals health, mental state or social life. The term is often reserved for drug addictions but it is sometimes applied to other compulsions, such as problem gambling, compulsive overeating, and hyperreligiosity Factors that have been suggested as causes of addiction include genetic, biological/pharmacological and social factors.

L'addiction est, au sens courant, une dépendance à une drogue. Au sens phénoménologique, c'est une conduite qui repose sur une envie répétée et irrépressible, en dépit de la motivation et des efforts du sujet pour s'y soustraire. Le sujet se livre à des addictions malgré la conscience aiguë qu'il a le plus souvent d'abus et de perte de sa liberté d'action, ou de leur éventualité.

Uzależnienie - nabyta silna potrzeba wykonywania jakiejś czynności lub zażywania jakiejś substancji. W praktyce określenie to posiada kilka znaczeń.W języku potocznym termin "uzależnienie" jest stosowany głównie do osób, które nadużywają narkotyków, leków (lekomania), alkoholu, czy papierosów. W szerszym kontekście może odnosić się do wielu innych zachowań np. gier hazardowych, oglądania telewizji, internetu, czy seksu. Są to uzależnienia często mniej znane i opisane, nie zawsze nawet określane w oficjalnych klasyfikacjach chorób, ICD-10 i DSM IV, jako zaburzenie. Dlatego współczesna psychologia traktuje pojęcie uzależnienia szeroko i zakłada, że obejmuje ono także „(...) inne wypadki, kiedy ludzie czują się zmuszeni angażować się w ryzykowne, ‘‘wymykające się spod kontroli’’ zachowania (...)” -

Verslaving is een toestand waarin een persoon fysiek en/of mentaal van een gewoonte of stof afhankelijk is, zodanig dat hij/zij deze gewoonte of stof niet, of heel moeilijk los kan laten. Als het lichaam deze stof of gewoonte dan moet loslaten kunnen er ernstige ontwenningsverschijnselen optreden bij deze persoon.
