An action-adventure game (also known as 'arcade adventure game') is a video game that combines elements of the adventure game genre with various action game elements. It is perhaps the broadest and most diverse genre in gaming, and can include many games which might better be categorized under narrow genres. The first known game in this genre is the Atari 2600 game Adventure (1979).

Wraz ze spadkiem popularności gier przygodowych, przygodowe gry akcji zyskały większą sławę. Efektem ubocznym jest fakt, że czasem przygodowe gry akcji przez graczy konsolowych nazywane są po prostu grami przygodowymi.

アクションアドベンチャーゲームは、その名の通りアクションゲームとアドベンチャーゲームを融合させたものである。 アクションアドベンチャーとは、2D・3Dを問わず表層的にはアクションゲームとあまり違いが無いが、アドベンチャーゲームのようにフラグを立てることによってゲームを進行（謎解き）する性質が強いものを指す。 その性質上、フラグ立て（謎解き）をシナリオに絡めて表現することが多く、純粋なアクションゲームと比較してストーリー性が強いものが多い。
