The most commonly used acres today are the international acre and, in the United States, the survey acre. One acre comprises 4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet. Because of alternative definitions of a yard or a foot, the exact size of an acre also varies slightly. Traditionally, an acre was a swath of land one furlong long and one chain wide. A modern acre can have arbitrary dimensions as long as the area is correct. For example, a strip of land 1 inch wide and 99 miles long is also an acre.

Acre [] ist eine Nicht-SI-Einheit der Fläche. Das Einheitenzeichen ist a. (mit Punkt) – nicht zu verwechseln mit a (ohne Punkt), der Abkürzung für die metrische Einheit Ar, oder mit A, dem Formelzeichen für die Fläche.Der Acre wurde als die Ackerfläche festgelegt, die ein Mann mit einem Ochsen an einem Tag beackern konnte (siehe Morgen (Einheit)). Da dies sehr variabel erscheinen mag, wurde der Acre umdefiniert. Die Flächen wurden in England von Edward I., Edward III., Heinrich VIII. und Georg IV. gesetzlich verankert und in den Kolonien (Commonwealth) inklusive den USA übernommen. Im britischen Weights and Measures Act von 1878 wurde der Acre mit 4840 Quadrat-Yards definiert.
