L’accumulation du capital revêt deux principaux aspects :au niveau macroéconomique, l'accumulation du capital, comme facteur de production, et qui permet d’augmenter la production totale de l’économique;au niveau individuel, ou au niveau d’une hypothétique « classe possédante » selon la terminologie marxiste, l’épargne accumulée porte au mains de quelques uns l'ensemble des biens d’un pays.

Akkumulation (von lat. accumulare = anhäufen) ist in der klassischen Schule die von Kapitalisten durch Sparen und Investieren des auf dem Markt realisierten Mehrwerts vorangetriebene Erweiterung des Kapitals. Der Begriff wird Karl Marx zugeschrieben, der sich dabei auch von dem etwa zur gleichen Zeit erfundenen Akkumulator beeinflussen lassen haben soll. Marx versteht dabei Akkumulation in einem doppelten Sinne: auf der einen Seite immer mehr Kapital in den Händen der Kapitalisten, auf der anderen Seite der Arbeiter immer mehr Elend. Gerade dies hält aber den Kapitalismus am Laufen, da die Lohnarbeiter ihre Arbeitskraft an die Kapitalisten zu für das Kapital günstigen Bedingungen verkaufen müssen, ähnlich wie bei einer Batterie ein elektrischer Strom fließt, wenn die beiden Gegenpole miteinander verbunden werden.
