In music, accompaniment is the art of playing along with a soloist or ensemble, often known as the lead, in a supporting manner as well as the music thus played. An accompaniment figure is a gesture used repeatedly in an accompaniment, such as:Alberti bass and other arpeggiosostinati or riffsHarmonic accompaniment is music played to accompany a melody line; it is usually chordal and played by such instruments as (acoustic or electric) guitar, piano, organ and bass guitar, but it can also be played by instruments that ordinarily play the melody, such as the violin. In most tonal music the melody and accompaniment are written from and share the same group of pitches, while in much atonal music the melody and accompaniment are chosen from entirely separate groups of pitches, often from different hexachords. Suivant l'œuvre abordée, le genre et la forme choisis, ce soutien harmonique et rythmique peut être très varié : un simple rythme répétitif de percussion (un tambourin ou des castagnettes ponctuant les arabesques d'une danseuse gitane) ;un contre-chant très pur ou très orné, parfois même improvisé (une flûte traversière virevoltante au-dessus d'une chanson devenue mythique : Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille de Jacques Dutronc) ;des accords plus ou moins complexes d'un instrument polyphonique (une guitare égrainant ses notes sur une comptine enfantine ou un piano soutenant près de la cheminée quelques chants de Noël) ; le support d'un groupe de quelques instrumentistes (le retour des Rolling Stones accompagnant leur chanteur vedette Mick Jagger) ;un orchestre de chambre accompagnant un ou plusieurs solistes (l'orchestre à cordes baroque complice d'un hautboïste dans le 2 concerto, opus 9, d'Albinoni) ;une composition magistrale interprétée par un grand orchestre symphonique dans un lieu consacré (l'orchestre de l'Opéra Garnier dans la dernière version du Rigoletto de Verdi).

Die Begleitung (früher auch oft Akkompagnement von frz. accompagnement) ist jenes musikalische Material, das zusätzlich zu einer Melodiestimme erklingt, um sie harmonisch und rhythmisch zu stützen. Dies kann von der einfachen akkordischen Gitarrenbegleitung eines Volksliedes bis zum aufwendig und differenziert gestalteten Orchestersatz einer Opernarie reichen.

伴奏（ばんそう）は、主として西洋音楽で使われる音楽用語で、主たる旋律を演奏する単数または複数の歌手または奏者に対し、副次的な演奏をすることをいう。伴奏の主たる役割は和音を演奏して和声的に音楽を充足することである。よって伴奏は、ピアノ、オルガン、チェンバロといった鍵盤楽器、ないしギター、リュート、また最近では電子楽器のような、和音を演奏しやすい楽器で行うか、オーケストラなどの合奏で行うのが普通である。伴奏は時に、主奏と同等またはそれ以上の役割を演ずることがある。旋律の掛け合いはもちろん、伴奏楽器が旋律を演奏し、主奏が副次的な動きをすることもある。曲全体にわたって役割が逆転しているようなものもある。ベートーヴェンのヴァイオリンソナタやシューマンの歌曲は、ピアノ伴奏の役割が非常に高い作品として知られている。
