Abstract algebra is the subject area of mathematics that studies algebraic structures such as groups, rings, fields, modules, vector spaces, and algebras. The phrase abstract algebra was coined at the turn of the 20th century to distinguish this area from what was normally referred to as algebra, the study of the rules for manipulating formulae and algebraic expressions involving unknowns and real or complex numbers, often now called elementary algebra. The distinction is rarely made in more recent writings.

Die Abstrakte Algebra ist das Teilgebiet der Mathematik, das sich mit einzelnen algebraischen Strukturen wie Gruppen, Ringen, Körpern, Modulen und nicht zuletzt den Algebren beschäftigt und deren Eigenschaften untersucht. Die Bezeichnung „abstrakte“ Algebra dient der Abgrenzung zu anderen Teilgebieten der Mathematik, die, historisch bedingt, ebenfalls als Algebra bezeichnet werden, wie etwa die elementare Algebra der Schulmathematik.

L'algebra astratta è il campo della matematica che si occupa dello studio delle strutture algebriche come gruppi, anelli e campi. Essa parte dallo studio degli "insiemi privi di struttura" (o  insiemistica vera e propria), per analizzare, via via, insiemi sempre più strutturati, cioè dotati di una o più leggi di composizione.
