The word Dervish, especially in European languages, refers to members of Sufi Muslim ascetic religious Tarika, known for their extreme poverty and austerity, similar to mendicant friars.The term comes from the Persian word Darwīsh [1] (درویش), which usually refers to a mendicant ascetic. This latter word is also used to refer to an unflappable or ascetic temperament (as in the Urdu phrase darwaishana thabiyath for an ascetic temperament); that is, for an attitude that is indifferent to material possessions and the like.

Le mot derviche (farsi : درويش [derwiš], mendiant) est d'origine persane et désigne un mendiant. Par glissement de sens c'est le membre de certaines confréries soufies pratiquant ou non la mendicité. Le mot est passé à l'arabe (دَرويش [darwīš]) et au turc (derviş [derviš]) où il ne désigne que les membres de certaines confréries religieuses.

Unter Abdal (auch ïsïq, torlaq) werden Bettelmönche aus manchen Derwischorden (Tariqas) verstanden. Durch Gesänge, Tanzen, Musik und psychedelische Rauschmittel versetzten sie sich in ekstatische Zustände. Meist zogen sie in Gruppen umher. Sie waren fast komplett rasiert (Haupthaar, Bart und Augenbrauen) und kleideten sich in Felle. Besonders hoch angesehen waren sie im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert in Kleinasien.

Abdal é um nome genérico dado aos religiosos persas que correspondente ao de derviche na Turquia e ao de monge entre os cristãos. É também o nome dado aos  sacerdotes tártaros.
