An alphabet is a standardized set of letters — basic written symbols — each of which roughly represents a  phoneme of a spoken language, either as it exists now or as it was in the past. There are other systems of writing such as logographs, in which each character represents a word, and syllabaries, in which each character represents a syllable, but alphabets are the most widespread writing system.

The Latin alphabet, also called the Roman alphabet, is the most widely used alphabetic writing system in the world today. Apart from Latin itself, the alphabet was adapted to the direct descendants of Latin (the Romance languages), Germanic,  Celtic and some Slavic languages from the Middle Ages, and finally to most languages of Europe. With the age of colonialism and Christian proselytism, the alphabet was spread overseas, and applied to Amerindian, Indigenous Australian, Austronesian, Vietnamese, Malay and Indonesian languages. More recently, Western linguists have also tended to prefer the Latin alphabet or the International Phonetic Alphabet (itself largely based on the Latin alphabet) when they transcribe or devise written standards for non-European languages; see for example the African reference alphabet.

L'alphabet latin est l'alphabet qu'on utilise majoritairement pour écrire les langues d'Europe occidentale ainsi que dans certains des pays qui ont été colonisés par les Européens. C'est, en concurrence avec l'alphabet cyrillique et, dans une bien moindre part, l'alphabet grec, l'écriture occidentale par défaut et maintenant – en raison de l'importance économique et culturelle de pays l'utilisant (comme les États-Unis) une écriture internationale : on peut trouver des mots écrits en lettres latines dans les rues du Japon comme dans celles d'Égypte. L'alphabet latin est également le seul utilisé à ce jour pour noter les adresses de sites internet (URL) et de courriel, en attendant une généralisation effective de l'unicode au moins pour les URL.

Ein Alphabet (das), über das altgriechische ἀλφάβητος alphábētos nach den Namen der ersten beiden phönizischen Buchstaben ist eine Menge von Zeichen zur schriftlichen Darstellung von Lauten einer Sprache. Der Name Alphabet geht auf die ersten beiden Buchstaben des griechischen Schriftsystems zurück (Alpha – α, Beta – β). Analog dazu sagt man im Deutschen A-B-C. Die festgelegte Reihenfolge erlaubt alphabetische Anordnungen wie beispielsweise in Wörterbüchern.

Un alfabeto è una collezione di simboli grafici, aventi di solito un ordine ben preciso, che servono a rappresentare le parole di una lingua.Spesso succede che i segni siano lettere, ovvero segni che rappresentano idealmente singoli suoni linguistici, ma non sempre si ha un perfetta rappresentazione tra l'alfabeto e sistema fonologico di un lingua, per cui nascono a volte combinazioni di lettere rappresentanti suoni altrimenti orfani oppure può capitare che lo stesso suono si rappresentato da più lettere ma in contesti diversi.
