Abbey est la sixième banque du Royaume-Uni et la seconde société de prêt immobilier en Europe, derrière Halifax (filiale de HBOS). La banque se nomme Abbey depuis 2003, date à laquelle elle a abandonné le nom Abbey National. Le siège social du groupe est à Milton Keynes dans le Buckinghamshire. Certaines branches sont basées à Bradford et Stockton-on-Tees. Abbey a récemment annoncé la délocalisation de ses centres de contact client de Derby, Warrington et Bradford, vers l’Inde, gardant uniquement Gateshead et Glasgow au Royaume-Uni. La banque appartient depuis 2004 au Grupo Santander.

Une abbaye (du latin abbatia) est un monastère ou un couvent catholique placé sous la direction d'un abbé (ou d'une abbesse; dérivé de l'araméen abba qui signifie « père »), lequel sert de père spirituel à la communauté religieuse. Les ordres monastiques, les chapitres canoniaux (de chanoinesses surtout), les communautés de chanoines réguliers ont vocation à fonder des abbayes. L'abbaye n'est donc pas nécessairement un lieu de clôture monastique.

Eine Abtei (von lat. abbatia) ist ein Kloster, dem ein Abt oder eine Äbtissin vorsteht.Für gewöhnlich besitzen lediglich die Mönchsorden und Regularkanoniker der Katholischen Kirche Klöster im Range einer Abtei. Eine Ausnahme bildet hier lediglich die Abtei St. Thomas in Alt Brünn der Augustiner (OSA). Als Abtei werden häufig auch Propsteien bezeichnet. Für die Erhebung eines Klosters zur Abtei durch den Heiligen Stuhl müssen bestimmte kirchenrechtliche Voraussetzungen erfüllt sein (z.B. eine bestimmte Mindestanzahl von Mönchen bzw. Nonnen).

L'abbazia (detta anche abazia o badia a seconda se diretta da un abate o una badessa), è un particolare tipo di monastero, che per il diritto canonico è un ente autonomo. Il nome deriva dal tardo latino abbatia, appunto abate, termine che inizialmente si riferiva solo alla persona che reggeva l'edificio, per poi assumere il significato più esteso del complesso dei beni che erano a disposizione di tale carica religiosa. Infatti molto spesso per abbazia in toponomastica si intende non soltanto l'edificio in se, quanto anche l'insediamento che si sviluppava intorno ad esso.
