An abbess (Latin abbatissa, fem. form of abbas, abbot) is the female superior, or Mother Superior, of an abbey of nuns.In Roman Catholic and Anglican abbeys, the mode of election, position, rights, and authority of an abbess correspond generally with those of an abbot. The office is elective, the choice being by the secret votes of the sisters from their own body. Like the abbot, the abbess is solemnly admitted to her office by formal blessing, conferred by the bishop in whose territory the monastery is or by an abbot or another bishop with his permission. Unlike the abbot, she receives only the ring and a copy of the rule of the order: the abbess does not receive the mitre, and she is not given a crosier as part of the blessing ceremony though, by ancient tradition, she may carry one when leading her sisters. She also traditionally adds a pectoral cross to her habit as a symbol of office.

La badessa (o abbadessa) è la superiora di un monastero di alcuni ordini religiosi cristiani.La sua giurisdizione amministrativa è pari a quella di un abate.Il monachesimo occidentale, tanto maschile quanto femminile, ha inizio nel IV secolo dopo Cristo. Dopo la fase degli "eremiti", uomini e donne, che si ritiravano nel deserto o in grotte in totale isolamento, si diffuse ad opera di San Paolo di Tebe, il cenobio. La vita cenobitica, non prevede un vero e proprio convento, ma tante celle o grotte isolate, con una cappella o chiesa in comune.

Аббатиса, хотя и наделяется аббатскими знаками отличия (нагрудный крест, кольцо, посох), но обладает только административной властью над подчиненными. Впервые термин встречается в 514.В настоящее время в Римско-католической церкви служит около 200 аббатис. Согласно католическому праву, выборы аббатисы происходят под председательством епископа или в присутствии его представителя. Аббатиса должны иметь 40 лет от роду и 10 лет после принесения обета.

En abbedissa är inom den katolska- och ortodoxa kyrkan titeln på föreståndarinnan för ett nunnekloster. Då den ortodoxa kyrkan inte har några ordnar benämns alla kvinnliga föreståndarinnor abbedissa, emedan i den katolska kyrkan är titeln reserverad för benediktin-, cisterciens-, kartusian-, birgittin- eller klarissföreståndarinnor. I andra ordnar benämns de "mother superior" (utan någon direkt motsvarighet på svenska) eller priorinna.
