A tessera (plural: tesserae, diminutive tessella) is an individual tile, usually formed in the shape of a cube, used in creating a mosaic. It is also known as an abaciscus or abaculus, and in Persian کاشي معرق.

Tessera (lat. für Viereck; Plural: tesserae; das Wort ist abgeleitet vom altgriechischen  / téssares – "vier") ist die Bezeichnung für die kleinen viereckigen Plättchen aus Stein, Keramik, Erz, Blei, Bein, Terrakotta oder Glas, mit denen man Mosaiken auf Fußböden auslegt.
