Zuider Zee
The Zuider Zee (
pronounced ,
Dutch: Zuiderzee, pronounced ) was a shallow
inlet of the
North Sea in the northwest of the
Netherlands, extending about 100 km inland and at most 50 km wide, with an overall depth of about 4 to 5 meters and a coastline of about 300 km. It covered 5,000 km². (2,000 square miles). Its name means "southern sea" in Dutch, indicating that the origin of the name can be found in
Friesland to the north of the Zuiderzee (also see
North Sea). In the
20th century the majority of the Zuiderzee was closed off from the North Sea (leaving the mouth of the inlet to become part of the
Wadden Sea) and the salt water inlet changed into a fresh water lake called the
IJsselmeer (
IJssel-lake) after the river that drains into it. The river IJssel is an estuary branch of the river
Rhine (Dutch: ).

Die Zuider Zee, auch Zuiderzee, Zuidersee,
friesisch Sudersee (ndl. , dt. ) war eine flache Meeresbucht (Tiefe zwischen 4 m und 5 m) der
Nordsee im Nordwesten der heutigen
Niederlande. Sie reichte ca. 100 km landeinwärts, war bis zu 50 km breit und bedeckte 5,000 km². Der Name bedeutet "Südliche See" als Gegensatz zur Nordsee (im
Niederländischen (und
Niederdeutschen) bedeutet zee "Meer", "(die) See" und meer "der See"). Beide Namen sind
friesischen Ursprungs, für die beide Meere nördlich und südlich ihres Siedlungsgebietes liegen. Durch
Eindeichung ist daraus das heutige
IJsselmeer entstanden, sowie weitere Binnenseen (
IJmeer,
Veluwemeer,
Gooimeer,
Markermeer,
Drontermeer,
Eemmeer und
Ketelmeer).
