Zeus

Zeus (in Greek: nominative: Zeús, genitive: Diós) in Greek mythology is the king of the gods, the ruler of Mount Olympus, and god of the sky and thunder. His symbols are the thunderbolt, eagle, bull and the oak. In addition to his Indo-European inheritance, the classical Zeus also derives certain iconographic traits from the cultures of the ancient Near East, such as the scepter. Zeus is frequently envisaged by Greek artists in one of two poses: standing, striding forward, a thunderbolt leveled in his raised right hand, or seated in majesty.

ZEUS is a particle detector in operation at HERA (Hadron Elektron Ring Anlage) in DESY, Hamburg. It began operating together with HERA in 1992. Leptons (electrons or positrons) are collided with protons by HERA in the interaction point of ZEUS. ZEUS is operated by an international collaboration of about 400 physicists from 42 institutes in 15 countries. The detector is about 12 x 15 x 14 meters in size and weighs 3600 tons.

Zeus (en grec ancien  / Zeús) est le roi des dieux dans la mythologie grecque. Il règne sur le Ciel et a pour symbole l'aigle et le trait de foudre. Fils de Cronos et de Rhéa, il est marié à sa sœur Héra. Il est le père de plusieurs dieux et de très nombreux héros. Zeus (altgriechisch Ζεύς (klassische Aussprache ungefähr: ); neugriechisch Δίας, Dias; römisch Jupiter), Sohn des Kronos und der Rhea (Göttin des Fliessens), galt als oberster olympischer Gott in der griechischen Mythologie und mächtiger als alle anderen griechischen Götter zusammen. Über ihm stand nur das (personifizierte) Schicksal – seine Töchter, die Moiren – auch er hatte sich ihnen zu fügen.

I suoi simboli sono la folgore, il toro, l'aquila e la quercia.Figlio di Crono e Rea era il più giovane dei suoi fratelli e sorelle. Nella maggior parte delle leggende era sposato con Era, anche se nel santuario dell'oracolo di Dodona come sua consorte si venerava Dione: secondo l'Iliade Zeus è il padre di Afrodite, avuta con Dione. È comunque famoso per le sue frequentissime avventure erotiche extraconiugali, tra le quali si ricorda anche una relazione omosessuale con Ganimede. Il frutto dei suoi numerosi convegni amorosi furono i suoi molti celeberrimi figli, tra i quali Atena, Apollo e Artemide, Hermes, Persefone, Dioniso, Perseo, Eracle, Elena, Minosse e le Muse. Dalla moglie Era secondo la tradizione ebbe Ares, Ebe,Efesto ed Ilizia.
