Odous; Plural Odontes; alle mit gleicher indogermanischer Wurzel dont als Partizip zu ed „essen“) sind Hartgebilde in der Mundhöhle, die als modifizierte Teile des Hautskeletts in ihrer Gesamtheit das Gebiss bilden. Sie sind aus den einfachen Hautzähnen vorzeitlicher Fische entstanden. Im Verlauf der Evolution verschmolzen die Schuppenzähne zu Hartgebilden mit basaler Knochenmasse, Dentinkrone und innerer Pulpahöhle.
