Zaandam

Zaandam is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is the main city of the municipality of Zaanstad, and received city rights in 1811. It is located on the Zaan, close to the North Sea Canal, and is in close proximity to the capital Amsterdam.The first European McDonald's restaurant opened in 1971 in Zaandam. Rave culture in the Netherlands began in Zaandam.The statistical district "Zaandam", which covers the village and the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 71,780.

Zaanstad ist eine Gemeinde in der Provinz Nordholland, Niederlande. Die Gemeinde Zaanstad wurde 1974 durch die Vereinigung der Gemeinden Zaandam (Deutsch oft auch inkorrekt Saardam), Krommenie, Assendelft, Koog aan de Zaan, Westzaan, Wormerveer und Zaandijk gebildet. Die Gemeinde liegt 6 km nordwestlich von Amsterdam am Fluss Zaan in der Nähe des Nordseekanals. Sie hat eine Fläche von 83 km² mit 141.285 Einwohnern (Stand: 1. Januar 2007).

Zaanstad to miasto w północno-zachodniej Holandii, w prowincji Holandia Północna, na północny zachód od Amsterdamu, nad Kanałem Morza Północnego. Powstało w 1974 roku z połączenia miasta Zaandam, Zaandijk, Koog aan de Zaan, Wormerveer, Krommenie, Assendelft i Westzaan. Około 140 tys. mieszkańców, z których połowa mieszka w Zaandamie.

Zaandam is een stad in de provincie Noord-Holland die in 1974 is opgegaan in de gemeente Zaanstad. Het is, qua aantal inwoners, de grootste plaats binnen die gemeente (de plaats met de grootste oppervlakte is Assendelft). Zaandam ligt aan weerszijden van de Zaan. De stad heeft 72.500 inwoners.
