Yukon Territory

Yukon (IPA: /ju.kɔn/), also known as The Yukon Territory (officially YT, but sometimes YK), is one of Canada's three territories, in the country's far northwest. It has a population of about 31,500, and its capital is Whitehorse, with a population of 23,272. People from the Yukon are known as Yukoners.

Lo Yukon è uno dei tre territori del Canada, situato nel nord-ovest del paese, con capoluogo Whitehorse. Il nome deriva dal fiume Yukon, che nella lingua del popolo Gwich’in significa "grande fiume". Lo Yukon è entrato nella Federazione canadese il 13 giugno 1898 dopo che da tre anni era parte dei Territori del Nord-Ovest.

Het vormt het meest noordwestelijk gelegen deelgebied van Canada.De Yukon werd een populaire bestemming in 1896, toen er goud werd gevonden in Bonanza Creek, nabij Dawson City. Dit was het startsein voor de Klondike Goldrush. Goudzoekers werden met bootladingen tegelijk vanuit Canada en de Verenigde Staten aangevoerd. In deze periode werd ook de White Pass & Yukon Route aangelegd. De Yukon is ook een rivier in het Yukon territorium en Alaska.
