Yoshitoshi ABe

is a Japanese graphic artist who works predominantly in anime and manga. He is a graduate of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.His works have an edgy style due to, among other things, his not using a ruler while drawing as is usual for most anime-style art. He first gained fame in his work on the avant-garde anime Serial Experiments Lain. He is also responsible for the concept and character design for the series NieA under 7. He is the creator of the doujinshi Haibane Renmei which was then adapted into an anime.

est un auteur japonais né le , qui œuvre sur les chemins croisés de l’animation et du manga. Son style très particulier et son trait analytique l’éloignent du gros de la production nippone ou la normalisation fait force de loi dans un système de création « industrielle ». Sa matière, la colorisation numérique très travaillée, ses décors complexes et détaillés en font un illustrateur apprécié, même en dehors de l’animation et du manga. Issu du milieu du dojinshi, il a toujours conservé un lien vers le milieu amateur, mais s’il n’a plus ce statut depuis longtemps, il continue cependant à dessiner et à diffuser sur un circuit indépendant des fanzines. Yoshitoshi ABe (jap. 安倍 吉俊, Abe Yoshitoshi, * 3. August 1971) ist ein avantgardistischer japanischer Künstler, der vor allem durch sein Wirken in der Manga- und Anime-Szene bekannt geworden ist. Er verwendet üblicherweise die Rōmaji-Schreibweise seines Namens anstatt der Kanji-Schreibweise, mit dem großgeschriebenem "B" in "ABe".Nach dem Abschluss der Oberschule arbeitete er für kurze Zeit als Assistent bei einem Mangaka, ehe er an die National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokio ging. In seine Studienzeit fällt auch seine erste Veröffentlichung in der Seinen-Anthologie Afternoon. Nachdem er seinen Bachelor abgeschlossen hatte, absolvierte er auch noch einen Magister. Seine Aktivität richtete sich lange Zeit vor allem auf die Dōjinshi-Szene, aber nachdem er an einigen Anime maßgeblich beteiligt war, verbreiterte er sein Wirkungsgebiet auf Manga, Anime, Videospiele und Illustrationen. Er arbeitet sehr stark mit Computern, vor allem Macs, wobei ein charakteristisches Merkmal seines Stils der zaghafte Gebrauch der Radierfunktion ist, so dass seine Bilder meist etwas Verwaschenes, Skizzenhaftes haben.

Zdobył sławę po tym jak, po wizycie na stronie domowej ABe, reżyser anime Serial Experiments Lain zatrudnił go w charakterze projektanta postaci. Yoshitoshi jest także odpowiedzialny za koncept oraz projekt postaci w NieA under 7 oraz jest autorem dōjinshi Haibane Renmei, które zostało później zaadoptowane na anime.
