Yoknapatawpha

Yoknapatawpha County is a fictional county created by American author William Faulkner as a setting for many of his novels. It is widely believed by scholars that Lafayette County, Mississippi is the basis for Yoknapatawpha County. Faulkner would often refer to it as "my apocryphal county."Yoknapatawpha county is located in northwestern Mississippi and its seat is the town of Jefferson. This fictional county is bounded on the north by the Tallahatchie River and on the south by the Yoknapatawpha River and has an area of 2,400 mi² (6,200 km²). Most of the eastern half (as well as a small part of the southwest corner) of the county is pine hill country.

Yoknapatawpha - fikcyjna kraina (hrabstwo) stworzona przez amerykańskiego pisarza Williama Faulknera na potrzeby wielu jego powieści.Pisarz umieścił wymyślone hrabstwo w północnej części stanu Missisipi. Yoknapatawpha ma powierzchnię 2 400 mil² (6 200 km²), w 1936 miała 15 611 mieszkańców - 6298 białych i 9313 czarnych. Sercem hrabstwa jest miasteczko Jefferson, otoczone rozległymi plantacjami bawełny (np. Setka Sutpena) i poletkami biedoty.

Yoknapatawpha (pronuncia "ioknapatofa") è una contea immaginaria del sud degli Stati Uniti con capitale, altrettanto immaginaria, Jefferson dove lo scrittore americano William Faulkner (Premio Nobel per la letteratura nel 1949) ha ambientato molti dei suoi romanzi e racconti; di fatto è sovrapponibile alla, realmente esistente, contea di Lafayette (Mississippi), con capitale Oxford. Nei suoi primi scritti la contea si chiamava Yocona, poi più tardi cambiò nome in Yoknapatawpha.
