For other uses please see Ymir (disambiguation).For Swedish Icebreaker Ymer please see Ymer (icebreaker)In Norse mythology, Ymir, also named Aurgelmir (Old Norse gravel-yeller) among the giants themselves, was the founder of the race of frost giants and an important figure in Norse cosmology. Snorri Sturluson combined several sources, along with some of his own conclusions, to explain Ymir's role in the Norse creation myth. The main sources available are the great Eddic poem Völuspá, the question and answer poem Grímnismál, and the question and answer poem Vafþrúðnismál. According to these poems, Ginnungagap existed before Heaven and Earth. The Northern region of Ginnungagap became full of ice, and this harsh land was known as Niflheim. Opposite of Niflheim was the southern region known as Muspelheim, which contained bright sparks and glowing embers. Ymir was conceived in Ginnungagap when the ice of Niflheim met with Muspelheim's heat and melted, releasing "eliwaves" and drops of eitr. The eitr drops stuck together and formed a giant of rime frost (a hrimthurs) between the two worlds and the sparks from Muspelheim gave him life. While Ymir slept, he fell into a sweat and conceived the race of giants. Under his left arm grew a man and a woman, and his legs begot his six-headed son Þrúðgelmir.

Ýmir (altnordisch, Zwilling, Zwitter), identisch mit Aurgelmir, ist in der nordischen Mythologie das älteste Lebewesen. Der Name Ymir wird für sehr alt gehalten und zum altindischen Yama und dem altpersischen Yima zur Seite gestellt.Er war ein zweigeschlechtlicher Urzeitriese mit sechs Köpfen. Er entstand aus der Vermischung des Gletschereises von Niflheim und aus dem Feuer von Muspelheim. Er ernährte sich von der Milch der Urkuh Auðhumbla.Als er von der Milch der Urkuh getrunken hatte, schlief er ein. Dabei bemerkte er nicht, dass neben ihm das Schwert des Feuerriesen Surtr einschlug. Da dieses sehr heiß war, entstand aus seinem Schweiß Thrudgelmir, manchmal als Ursprung der Hrimthursen bezeichnet. Dies war ein sechsköpfiger Riese. In Varianten wird berichtet, dass sogar drei Hrimthursen entstanden sind, wovon aber nur der vorstehende mit Namen überliefert ist. Der Wafthrudnir wird als Sohn von Ymir bezeichnet und gilt ebenfalls als Stammvater der Hrimthursen.

Ymir Starszy (Imir) - w mitologii nordyckiej pierwsza żywa istota, praolbrzym, który wyłonił się z ciepłej wody w otchłani Ginnungagap. Stało się to w morzu deszczu i stopniałego śniegu, powstałego za sprawą lodu krainy Niflheim na północy oraz ognia krainy Muspelheim na południu. Ymir dał życie pierwszym ludziom-gigantom oraz lodowym olbrzymom. Olbrzymem opiekowała się krowa Audhumla, która liżąc lodową skałę przywołała do życia Búriego (Zrodzony), dziada Odyna, Viliego i Vé. Trzej bracia zabili Ymira i stworzyli z jego ciała Midgard (Śródziemie). Z mięsa powstała ziemia, z kości - góry, z zębów i szczęk - kamienie i skały, z czaszki zaś - sklepienie nieba. Brwi Ymira posłużyły za wał chroniący Śródziemie przed atakami innych olbrzymów.
