Sie hat eine Gesamtlänge von 1.376 km und ist der größte Nebenfluss des Ganges.Die Yamuna entspringt beim Yamunotri-Schrein im Himalaya und fließt durch die indischen Bundesstaaten Haryana und Uttar Pradesh und das Unionsterritorium Delhi. Unter anderem befinden sich die Städte Delhi, Mathura und Agra entlang des Flusses. Bei Allahabad mündet sie in den Ganges.Die wichtigsten Nebenflüsse der Yamuna sind Tons, Chambal, Betwa, Singh und Ken.

Yamuna, o Jumna, è il nome di una divinità fluviale della religione indù e trae il suo nome dal fiume omonimo, che scorre nel nord dell'India. È nota anche col nome di Yami, figlia di Vivasvat e di Saranya.Nei Veda Yami è la prima donna, e sorella gemella di Yama, il primo uomo ed entrambi figli di Surya. Nel decimo mandala del Rig Veda c'è un inno nel quale l'una canta all'altro e viceversa.In Tibet è la dea della morte e regna sugli spiriti femminili dell'aldilà (Naraka). È la consorte di Yama, anch'egli signore dell'oltretomba.
