Die Yao sind eine der 56 durch die Volksrepublik China anerkannten Nationalitäten. Die Yao zählen in China etwa 2,64 Millionen Menschen. Sie leben in den bergigen Regionen im Süden und Südwesten Chinas. Daneben siedeln sie auch im nördlichen Laos und Vietnam sowie in Myanmar. Rund 60.000 Yao leben im Norden Thailands. Sie werden dort zu den Bergvölkern gezählt.

Yao (Wym. Jao, 瑶族, Hanyu Pinyin: Yáo zú; Wiet.: người Dao), lud mieszkający w Chinach i na Półwyspie Indochińskim w Wietnamie oraz Laosie. Ich większe skupiska w Chinach to prowincje Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guanxi Zhuang. Mówią językiem Yao, należącym do rodziny językowej miao-yao. Reprezentują najwcześniejszą warstwę etniczną ludności w południowych Chinach. Trwająca do dziś migracja Yao na południe spowodowana wypieraniem przez Chińczyków, powoduje osiedlanie się enklawami, w górskich trudno dostępnych terenach.
