Xylophone

The xylophone (from the Greek meaning 'wooden sound') is a musical instrument in the percussion family which probably originated in Indonesia. It consists of wooden bars of various lengths that are struck by plastic, wooden, or rubber mallets. Each bar is tuned to a specific pitch of the musical scale. Xylophone can refer to western style concert xylophones or to one of the many wooden mallet percussion instruments found around the world. Xylophones are tuned to different scale systems depending on their origin, including pentatonic, heptatonic, diatonic, or chromatic. The arrangement of the bars is generally from low (longer bars) to high (shorter bars).

Das Xylophon bzw. -fon (v. griech.: xylos Holz; phoné Stimme) ist ein traditionelles Schlaginstrument, das seine primitiven Ursprünge in Asien hat und in Afrika weiterentwickelt wurde. De concert xylofoon is een muziekinstrument behorend tot het gestemde slagwerk dat bestaat uit twee rijen toetsen, die zijn opgehangen aan een op een frame gespannen touw. Een rij voor de witte toetsen, als je vergelijkt met de piano, en een rij voor de zwarte. Onder iedere toets kan een resonator hangen om de grondtoon te versterken. Omdat de toonhoogte (onder andere) afhangt van de lengte van de toets zijn de laagste toetsen veel langer dan de hoogste (hetzelfde geldt voor de resonatoren)
