Xylol

The term xylenes refers to a group of 3 benzene derivatives which encompasses ortho-, meta-, and para- isomers of dimethyl benzene. The o-, m- and p- isomers specify to which carbon atoms (of the main benzene ring) the two methyl groups are attached. Counting the carbon atoms from one of the ring carbons bonded to a methyl group, and counting towards the second ring carbon bonded to a methyl group, the o- isomer has the IUPAC name of 1,2-dimethylbenzene. The m- isomer has the IUPAC name of 1,3-dimethylbenzene. And p- isomer has the IUPAC name of 1,4-dimethylbenzene.

Xylol (auch Xylen oder Dimethylbenzol, nach der IUPAC-Nomenklatur Dimethylbenzen) ist eine farblose Flüssigkeit. Technisches Xylol ist ein Isomerengemisch aus den drei Verbindungen meta-Xylol (60 %),  ortho-Xylol (10–25 %) und para-Xylol (10–25 %). Xylole gehören zur Klasse der aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffe. Seine Isomeren besitzen unterschiedliche physikalische Eigenschaften. Das Xylolgemisch wird hauptsächlich als Lösungsmittel verwendet.

Ma właściwości rakotwórcze.Ksylen występuje jako trzy izomery strukturalne, różniące się pozycją dwóch grup metylowych w stosunku do siebie, w pierścieniu benzenowym: 1,2 (orto), 1,3 (meta) i 1,4 (para). Własności wszystkich trzech izomerów są do siebie dość zbliżone, choć różnią się one nieco reaktywności w reakcji Friedla-Craftsa, oraz temperaturą topnienia i wrzenia.
