Xerox Alto

The Xerox Alto, developed at Xerox PARC in 1973, was an early minicomputer and the first computer to use the desktop metaphor and graphical user interface (GUI). While often cited as the first personal computer, other systems are also candidates, and the Alto was a Xerox research tool, not a commercial product.

Le Xerox Alto fut conçu au Xerox PARC en 1973. Il fut un des premiers ordinateurs et le premier à utiliser la métaphore du bureau et une interface graphique. Bien qu'on le cite comme étant le premier ordinateur personnel, il y a d'autres machines qui sont aussi candidats au titre, et le Alto fut un outil de recherche de Xerox, pas un produit commercial.

Der Xerox Alto wurde 1973 am Forschungszentrum Xerox PARC entwickelt und war der erste Computer mit einer grafischen Benutzeroberfläche (GUI).Die ersten Entwürfe entstanden 1972 unter dem Entwickler Butler Lampson. Weitere beteiligte Entwickler waren Ed McCreight, Charles P. Thacker, Bob Sproull und Dave Boggs. Der Hauptspeicher betrug 64 kB und konnte auf 256 kB erweitert werden. Die Wechselfestplatte fasste 2,5 MB. Das Gehäuse des Rechners hatte in etwa die Ausmaße einer kleinen Gefriertruhe. Der Computer wurde häufig als erster Personal Computer oder als erste Workstation bezeichnet. Er hatte bereits eine 3-Tasten-Maus, nutzte Rastergrafik, Fenster, Menüs und Icons. Über das Ethernet-Protokoll konnte er mit anderen Rechnern verbunden werden.
