XON

XON/XOFF is software data flow communications protocol for controlling the flow of data between computers and other devices. X stands for transmitter. This is frequently referred to as "software flow control".Typically the receiver will send an XOFF character when it can't take any more data (e.g. it may need time to process something), and when it can once again take more data, will send an XON character to the transmitter.The software must be written to respond to these characters, and to both insert them into and extract them from the original data stream.

Mit Datenflusskontrolle (engl. data flow control) oder Datenflusssteuerung werden unterschiedliche Verfahren bezeichnet, mit denen die Datenübertragung von Endgeräten an einem Datennetz, die nicht synchron arbeiten, so gesteuert wird, dass eine möglichst kontinuierliche Datenübermittlung ohne Verluste erfolgen kann.
