X.25 is an ITU-T standard protocol suite for packet switched wide area network (WAN) communication. An X.25 WAN consists of  packet-switching exchange (PSE) nodes as the networking hardware, and leased lines, Plain old telephone service connections or ISDN connections as physical links. X.25 is a family of protocols that was popular during the 1980s with telecommunications companies and in financial transaction systems such as automated teller machines. X.25 was originally defined by the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCITT, now ITU-T) in a series of drafts and finalized in a publication known as The Orange Book in 1976.

X.25 ist eine von der ITU-T standardisierte Protokollfamilie für großräumige Computernetze (WANs) über das Telefon-Netzwerk. Der Standard definiert die physikalische Schicht, Sicherungsschicht und Vermittlungsschicht (Schicht 1 bis 3) des OSI-Modells. International wird X.25 als packet switching network (Paketvermitteltes Netzwerk) verkauft, meistens von Telefongesellschaften. Produktname sowohl bei der Deutschen Telekom als auch bei der Österreichischen Telekom ist Datex-P.

X.25 est un protocole de communication normalisé par commutation de paquets en mode point à point offrant de nombreux services.

X.25 är en förbindelseorienterad paketförmedlad nätverkstjänst, för synkron datatrafik. Den ursprungliga standarden togs fram av CCITT, numera ITU, 1976, men vidareutvecklades i samarbete med flera telebolag och lanseringen skedde 1980.

X.25 - to rekomendowany przez ITU-T standard protokołu komunikacyjnego dla publicznych sieci WAN, definiujący interfejs połączenia pomiędzy terminalem danych DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) a urządzeniem transmisji danych DCE (Data Circuit-terminating Equipment), dla terminali pracujących w trybie pakietowym, podłączonych do publicznych sieci transmisji danych poprzez łącze dedykowane.
