This article is about the modern sport Wushu. For information on other types of Chinese martial arts, see Chinese martial arts. For the meaning of the word, see wushu (term). Wushu, also known as modern wushu or contemporary wushu, is both an exhibition and a full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. It was created in the People's Republic of China after 1949, in an attempt to nationalize the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts. Most of the modern competition forms (套路 taolu) were formed from their parent arts (see list below) by government-appointed committee. Some authors have surmised that the creation of sport wushu and its subsequent disassociation from self-defense and the traditional closed system of family lineages was an attempt to suppress what the PRC felt was potentially subversive aspects of Chinese martial arts. In contemporary times, wushu has become a truly international sport through the International Wushu Federation (IWUF), which holds the World Wushu Championships every two years; the first World Championships were held in 1991 in Beijing and won by Clark Zhang.

Wushù ist ein Sammelbegriff für die chinesischen Kampfkünste. Andere Bezeichnungen dafür sind Gúoshù oder Quánfa . Im Westen wird häufig fälschlicherweise der Begriff Kung Fu  verwendet.

Wushu (trad.: 武術; upr.: 武术; pinyin: wǔshù ) – ogół chińskich sztuk walki przyjęło się na Zachodzie określać nazwą kung-fu. Kung-fu oznacza jednak, nie sztukę walki, a wysoki poziom umiejętności osiągnięty w wyniku ciężkiej, długotrwałej nauki. Może to dotyczyć wielu różnych dziedzin. Jeśli chodzi o chińskie sztuki walki, to bardziej prawidłowa jest nazwa używana w Chinach – wushu, czyli dosłownie: sztuki wojenne. Termin wushu odczytany zgodnie z japońską lekcją brzmi bu-jutsu.

Arti marziali cinesi (cinese: 中国武術) è una denominazione che si riferisce alla totalità dei vari stili di arti marziali nati in Cina.Le arti marziali cinesi, nel loro insieme, hanno ricevuto molte denominazioni diverse, a seconda del luogo e del periodo in cui si sono diffuse. Quando, negli anni trenta, le arti marziali cinesi e giapponesi iniziarono ad essere conosciute in occidente, la conoscenza delle lingue e delle culture dell'asia orientale erano molto limitate. Questo ha portato spesso alla creazione di leggende e di miti (molti dei quali sopravvivono ancora oggi) e ad un uso improprio di molti termini cinesi.Kung Fu (功夫, pinyin: gōng fu) è il termine più popolare in occidente e ad Hong Kong, soprattuto a causa della diffusione, con questo nome, del cinema sulle arti marziali cinesi. In cinese kung-fu letteralmente significa "esercizio eseguito con abilità" e rappresenta il percorso necessario all'apprendimento profondo di una disciplina (non necessariamente marziale). Per estensione, questo termine indica anche il raggiungimento di un ottimo livello; possedere il kung-fu rappresenta il raggiungimento dell'assoluta padronanza della tecnica.Wǔshù (武術, Wade-Giles: Wu Shu) è il termine più usato nella Repubblica popolare cinese, e si sta sempre più diffondendo anche in occidente.
